CSS in 2026: Three Features Worth Bringing Into Your Workflow
Some of the most useful CSS improvements this year solve everyday interface problems: growing form fields, managing style boundaries, and choosing contrasting colors.
First, a naming clarification: there is no official “CSS5” release. CSS evolves through independently versioned modules. The features below joined Baseline Newly Available in 2026, a cross-browser compatibility milestone rather than the date of their first implementation.
1. Content-aware form controls with field-sizing
field-sizing: content allows supported form controls to size themselves around their content. For textareas, it can replace JavaScript written solely to adjust their height. Set sensible minimum and maximum dimensions so long input does not take over the page.
2. Explicit style boundaries with @scope
@scope targets a section of the DOM and can define a boundary where its rules stop matching. This helps keep component selectors manageable when components appear inside larger pages. Scoped rules still participate in the cascade; inheritance can cross scope boundaries.
3. Black-or-white selection with contrast-color()
contrast-color() selects black or white according to which provides greater contrast against a supplied color. It is useful for dynamic backgrounds, but it does not replace accessibility testing. Transparency, gradients, text size, and interaction states still affect the rendered result.
Adopting these features responsibly
Start with a working fallback, then add enhancements where supported. Check the browser versions your audience uses, test realistic content, and verify keyboard interactions. Baseline Newly Available does not mean every older browser or embedded webview supports a feature.
Which of these would remove the most complexity from your codebase?
